Might be a dumb question about .22s but will ask anyway.
Ok ,
I've shot several different .22s over the years , single shot , single shot automatic , bolt action , semi auto . Several of each have been stamped , short , long , long rifle Several listed ,short Several listed long rifle .etc now the question is what is it in the design of a rifle that limits the 22 round it can shoot ?I understand you cant put a LR in a chamber for a short because its too long , but why can only a few rifles shoot shorts and LR in the same chamber . Why cant all rifles that shoot LR shoot shorts ? I could see that the shorts might not cycle correctly and load but once it is chambered wouldn't the head space .etc be the same in all rifles ? Example , bolt action .22 LR only vs bolt action marked short , long , long rifle . What is the difference in the rifle that prevents the long rifle only from shooting short and longs ? |

I shoot out of ruger single six pistol and a Stevens rolling block single shot rifle
22lr 22l <rare 22shorts 22colbri you can shoot all those from a 22lr chamber just so you dont have a action to worry about ...the action type causes the issue...for example..a 22short will not work a 22lr semi-auto action (it wont cycle the action and eject)...but you could still shoot a short on a one by one basis 22 magnum is a totally different cartrige and requires a totally different chamber I shoot CCI minimag shorts in my single shot rifle all the time because it actually makes less noise than my pellet gun |

Cant remember the make and model , think it was a marlin though , tube fed semi auto that was actually marked short , long , long rifle .Shot all 3 , just could not mix the rounds .
magazine fed may be different since possibility of movement of the round prior to loading , could the round possibly slide foreward prior to the slide contacting it and cause a misfire when it strikes the rim of the shell ? |
Re: Might be a dumb question about .22s but will ask anyway.
the issue tends to be failure to eject or failure to load due to the lighter loads being to light to cycle the action fully.....i personally dont see how it would be any more suseptical to firing from a rim hit as you describe
i really like the 22shorts in my revolver pistols etc due to the low noise aspects |

not sure what your question is...

Short version.
Why does 1bolt action rifle say long rifle only and another bolt action rifle say short , long , long rifle ? What allows 1 to shoot all 3 and the other to be restricted to long rifle only ? |

Semi-automatic rifles firing .22 LR cartridges often will work properly only when firing standard or high velocity .22 LR ammunition; subsonic rounds will often not cycle their actions properly. Bolt-action or lever-action rifles, however, can utilize any of the variants (high velocity to subsonic). |

ok as an example
Marlin Model 981 , tube fed shoots all 3 .22 shells Savage MK II , magazine fed shoots only 22LR I assume the difference is that the extra room in the mag wont allow proper feeding . But is it safe and acceptable to shoot it as a single shot with shorts and manually load each shell in . I have a winchester mod 55 single shot automatic that shoots all 3 and with shooting shorts in it is as quiet as a air rifle so neighbors dont hear a thing . |
